Hooray, my webcam is back, but only when my home server is online. I switched to javascript rendering because the webcamxp flash object is not compatible with the linux webcam-server.

This weekend I finally got myself some time to check out some interesting programming frameworks. As I said before I'd like to totally rework my website from php to java. Php is not that bad but the language doesn't force you to write good code, It's easy to fall back to amateurism.
These are the frameworks/languages I've been looking at:

Just saw this '3D' film at the movies, 3D is nice but they need to work on the movie content if you ask me.
My new toy has arrived today. Yesterday I finally decided to get me a 'squeezebox'. By connecting a squeezebox to your stereo you can stream your music anywhere in your house. All you need is a wifi network and a pc where your music is stored.
Using the remote you can browse your tunes, select a web radio station or compose playlists. It is quite pricey but it sure is worth the money!
The European distributor is Logitech.
I'm reworking my website using Java + Apache Wicket. Results should be visible soon on somatik.eu. If you ever decide to make your own website be sure to check out wicket! No xml configuration, clean code and easy reuse of components...

Just closed my first bug report / feature request on the google code project page. A column has been added to the info table with movie runtime in minutes. Feel free to report some more feature requests!

This compilation is full of old and newer music you probably never heard of and they all flow together into a great listening experience. A great compilation for a cosy winter evening!

A lot of interesting new initiatives came up on the net lately... all trying to be a replacement for the mighty MS Office. If you ask me, only business people should buy MS Office these days, other people should do fine with one of the alternatives presented here.
Native: OpenOffice has been there for a while now and it is quite complete. It has to be installed on your hard disk before use.
Java: Thinkfree Office is available for online or offline use, runs on every pc (mac/win/linux) and has a slightly lighter feature set than OpenOffice.
Web oriented (AJAX): These Word or Office imitations are very handy because they are accessible straight from your browser. The basic operations are available and some of them let you save the files online as well… Here are a few examples: Writely (Google), ajaxWrite and Zoho Writer

Last week I started reading this article about game physics. The normal way for simulating particles takes way to much cpu, that's why they use the verlet integration. Instead of using position, velocity and acceleration, you use position, previous position and acceleration. By substracting position to previous position you can approximate velocity... pretty cool stuff!
The demo is also my first java OpenGL application, in fact it's a modification of one of the NeHe OpenGL tutorials. Java sources for the tutorials can be found here.

Pandora
This site offers you a free trial time of about 10 hours. They have a nice flash player on their website and they are quite good in music selecting.
last.fm
Last.fm is much more than just an online radio, you can keep statistics of the tracks you played, contact your music neighbours, get to know more about certain artists... Be sure to check this one out! It's my favourite.
iRate
iRATE radio is a collaborative filtering system for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X that downloads and plays music. As you rate music it automatically finds more free music that you'll like by finding people with similar music tastes. I think it's quite slow when downloading tracks, but the java webstart application rules! Keep it running a few hours to start with a bigger collection. I'd love to have such a great idea one day :-)

As java programmer, there is one thing you don't want to miss here in Belgium: JavaPolis. I learned a lot of new stuff overthere, AJAX seemed to be the new buzzword when speaking about web technologies. You've probably used some AJAX websites by now (eg. gmail). As a small test I updated my music list using ajax to refresh the list, it should be a lot faster than before. More to come...

Last week I went to "Lotus Europa", the new concert tour of Spinvis. It started with an other group playing for about half an hour. The group consists of 3 guys from Leuven (Belgium). They are called "Grim" and play their own versions of old classical music like Satie and Pärt, absolutely fantastic sound. Immediately bought their first album which is a bit slower than what they played live. One of the group memebers told me the next album will be a lot heavier (more emphasis on the drums) and more electronic.
Spinvis was great as well, as I expected, some old tracks reworked and some new stuff. Those musicians are amazing, I've never seen somebody play a chello like that.
Had some problems with my website after removing te login, the google bot crawled my site and caused some delete actions to be triggered. Still don't get how it got to login under my nickname... All damage has been fixed. Logins are not saved atm...
I'm thinking about rewriting the whole site in jsp, object oriented php sucks if you ask me (maybe I just need a good editor?). [EDIT] Login is back in full force!

It used to be necessairy to enter a nickname just to visit any page of my website, now you only need to provide a nickname for playing games or viewing the guestbook. Did some other minor changes as well.
I discovered 'Jerboa - Au Cinema' by listening to stubru, ordered the cd last week and it's great. The music of this belgian artist is something between dj krush, dj shadow and yonderboi (check the new yonderboi album! it rocks). Lots of breaks, some hiphop vocals and great tunez...You'll find more info and some tracks on his website. Check this interview as well.

People always ask me how to resize their pictures for the photo site. I made a small java application to do it automaticly by just selecting the source direcory of your pictures. I've put the link below the botleecher appliction in the bottom left corner of my website.
Don't forget you need java 1.5 to start the application!

Fading windows, new theme... more clutter, I'd rather see a clean desktop like gnome or OS X. Hope beta 2 will bring some more new (usefull) stuff. I'm back to Fedora / SuSE / Ubuntu and XP for now.
I just bought a new widescreen lcd monitor, 24" in front of my eyes... who needs a TV to watch movies eh... Anyways, yesterday ZDNet.be went widescreen so I decided to do the same. No luck if you are still surfing at 800*600 pixels.
I'm reading this book about java game programming and I've just updated the snake game. The game should run much smoother, speed levels might be a bit different tho. More game stuff coming soon!

When you click on this link my application should start. If you see some xml, try saving the link to your desktop and doubleclick on it. You need a recent version of java to start the application.
Now about the application itself, it's a tool to download files from irc bots, at the moment it connects to #dnbmp3. Select one of the bots (they got a + in their nick) and click start. The latest releases should be coming your way.
Let me know what you think about it! I'm plannign to make some new games that start this way.

I optimized the tetris game a bit more, it should take less cpu power. Also fixed a bug: new blocks started falling before lines were removed. Let me know if you find more bugs. Sometimes blocks keep moving right on my portable but I think that's rather a jvm bug.

I've coded a birthday calendar. Pjd requested this feature last week and it was't too hard to implement. So everybody go to the your user info page and enter your birthday!

Thanks to ornarf I was able to change the score sytem to the one used on the gameboy, scores will be much higher but also better balanced. Still need to change one thing but that won't make a lot of change to the final scores so start playing now!
I think most bugs are fixed right now. The score system might change to the one on the gameboy version. Keep on playing the game and let me know if you would like to see an other game on my website!

Yesterday, I baught this new music cd, the soundtrack of "Danny the dog" by Massive Attack. The cd is 'copy protected' but linux doesn't seem to have any problems playing it :-D Can't wait to see the movie!

I just got back from Shark tale, great funny movie. A bit like finding nemo but also different, less dramatic. Some other good movies in Belgian theatres at the moment are Man on fire and Collateral.
I fixed the small previews for the color box images, they are now resized on the server, it's much better than letting your browser resize the images...

I've installed this new linux distribution on my portable, and I realy like it, much better than fedora that I use on my other machine. Want to try linux? try ubuntu!

Yep, my internet is back, and I put the Direct3D demo I made online, check it out: download
Install and than run from the start-programs menu. Use space to change object. Rerun the msi file to uninstall. You need The latest DirectX and .net framework.
I moved the foto site to my other hosting, the new url is foto.somatic.be. The old url still works. I'll try to transfer my whole site to the new hosting later this month. Let me know if you find any dead links or other problems.
You can now list by genre on the good music list.
The Webcam take a picure link is broken because of my hosting provider, i'll try to fix it when I change hosting... Update: Problem solved!

After a week of Microsoft Summerbootcamp DirectX i'm back for some site updates. Maybe i'll put a link to the particle system demo I made this week, but for now it seems it won't work on other ppl's pc's... It's possible to see the genres on the music list. I might add sorting by genre later on... Check the list from time to time, I"ll be adding songs frequently.

I'll be working at Bavik this week so there probably won't be any updates. Today I have upgraded my java skillz. I'm planning to make my next site in java instead of php since I have a jsp/servlet hosting now. Later more... Nu zijn er normaal geen fouten meer in het spel...
Voor de mensen die het spel niet snappen, je moet dus de verborgen combinatie raden, bij elke guess komen er rechts pinnetjes, de volgorde ervan is niet van belang, een wit pinnetje wil zeggen dat je een goede kleur hebt maar op de verkeerde plaats, een zwart pinnetje wil zeggen een goede kleur op de goede plaats.
Het spel is natuurlijk veel moeilijker dan guess the number, maar toch niet te rap opgeven, gewoon je hoofd breken op elke keuze :p
Ik ga misschien nog proberen van de gfx wat te verfraaien :)
